Common questions
Does Nomad Ready work without internet?
Yes. Your inventory, checklists, survival guides, bundled books, games, saved alerts and forecast, and any maps or audiobooks you've downloaded all work fully offline. Internet is only needed to refresh alerts, download maps or audiobooks, and open web links.
Why am I not getting weather alerts?
- Open the Alerts tab and set your location, using GPS or by entering coordinates.
- Turn on Notify me of severe & emergency alerts, and allow notifications when asked.
- Alerts come from the U.S. National Weather Service and cover the U.S. and its territories only.
Wireless Emergency Alerts (Presidential, AMBER, imminent threat) come straight from your carrier. Turn them on in iPhone Settings → Notifications → Government Alerts.
How do I get offline topographic maps?
Open the Map tab, tap the layers button, and under Topographic map choose a center and radius, then tap Download topo while online. Shaded relief and contour lines (in feet) then work anywhere. Zoom in to see contour lines.
What is Project NOMAD, and do I need it?
Project NOMAD is a separate, free, open-source offline server you can run at home on a spare computer. It provides offline Wikipedia, medical references, maps, and local AI. Nomad Ready works without it. If you have one, connect on the Nomad tab to download street maps, ask its AI questions, and sync your inventory. Nomad Ready is not affiliated with Project NOMAD or Crosstalk Solutions.
How do the days-of-supply numbers work?
Set your household on Home → Settings. Nomad Ready plans 1 gallon (3.8 L) of water per person per day and about 2,000 calories per adult. For water and food items, enter the liters or calories per unit, or add items from the catalog, which fills these in for you.
How do I back up my data?
Go to Home → Settings → Save full backup, and keep the file somewhere safe, like Files, iCloud Drive, or a USB drive. Use Restore from backup to bring it back on a new phone.
Audiobooks won't download
Audiobooks come from the Internet Archive and need an internet connection to download. Make sure you have enough free space (books are typically 50–300 MB) and keep the app open while downloading. Once downloaded, chapters play offline.
How can I try the beta?
Nomad Ready is currently in beta on TestFlight. Email info@nextdesign.dev to request an invite.
Safety note
Nomad Ready's guides are for quick reference only. They are not a substitute for professional medical advice, training, or official emergency instructions. In an emergency, follow guidance from local officials, and call 911 when you can.
